Newton police responded to a report of domestic violence and were met with an "out of control" suspect on Saturday, March 4 around 9:55 p.m., the Newton Police Department said.
The domestic violence suspect dashed away from police and into an apartment when they tried to arrest him, police said. Police found the suspect but he attacked him, trying to unholster the officers' guns and punching a pair of police in the head, rendering one officer unconscious.
The suspect, Juan Gonzalez, was ordered held without bail until a dangerousness hearing is completed, NBC Boston reports. Witnesses at the scene contest the narrative offered by police and say that Gonzalez remained calm throughout the incident and that police used excessive force.
Another hearing is scheduled for Gonzalez at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 6, according to NBC Boston.
The injured police officers have been discharged from Newton Wellesley Hospital and are "sore but recovering," Newton police say.
